David G. Roberts
1929 - 2018
Dave passed peacefully in his sleep at City Hospital on Sunday, March 4, 2018. David was born May 25, 1929 in Prince Albert, SK, the oldest child of George and Helen Roberts (both deceased). David was predeceased by his first wife of 34 years, Dorothy (Oct. 1985), and his second wife of 17 years Viola “Vi” (June 2006), and sister Alba (2012) (Dan, 2011) Palsich. He is survived by his brother Brian (Betty) of Prince Albert, sister Helen, of Sturgeon Lake, son Douglas of Saskatoon, 2 granddaughters Cheryl (Tod) Kunkel and Marrianne Roberts; as well as several great-grandchildren. After living on the homestead 2 miles northeast of Holbein, SK for 17 years he set out to make his own way in life. This trail took him through eastern Canada and parts of the northeast United States. By the time he was 25 he had decided to settle down in Toronto, where he met and eventually married Dorothy Gilbert in 1951. After graduating from a heavy-duty diesel mechanics course in late 1953 he failed to obtain an apprenticeship and decided to try the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). He drove for the TTC until family matters in 1965 forced him to take his family back west to Saskatchewan, and they settled in Saskatoon. He quickly landed a position at Saskatoon Transit as a driver and was there until his retirement in 1994. His passions were many, usually anything that he could physically make. That included cooking, baking, tailoring, gardening, woodworking and especially his first love, farming. He liked to travel, driving everywhere he went, and after Dorothy passed on, he travelled Western Canada till he found his next love, Vi Quennell in Watrous. Here he found a way to follow his first love, farming. He was able to help at Vi’s family farm near Young, SK until he was physically unable to drive out and help work the farm. The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 12, 2018 at Windsor Chapel (704 Windsor St.) in Saskatoon, officiated by Rev. Dr. Frank Jeske of Westgate Alliance Church. The Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon. A Get-Together will follow at Windsor Chapel. Arrangements in care of John Schachtel - Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
