GRIFFIN, Mary Elizabeth (nee Gryba)

August 12, 1926 - March 28, 2017

Mary Elizabeth Griffin passed away peacefully at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon at the age of 90, with Holly Anne, Jessica and Joel at her side. Mary was born in Melville, SK. She was the first of six children born to Mike and Nellie Gryba who farmed in Yellow Creek. After completing Grade 12 and Normal School in Saskatoon, Mary taught at rural schools throughout Saskatchewan. In 1948 she married Fred Griffin; they were married for 45 years. Children Frederick Michael and Holly Anne were born during the family's 3 years in Yellow Creek. After moving to B.C., twin sons Michael and Maxwell were born in 1953 and Patricia in 1955. During the family's early years in North Vancouver Mary resumed teaching elementary school while completing her university degree. Through her 25 year career in West Vancouver she focused on intermediate grade levels and special education at various schools throughout the district. Although the family was city based, Mary and Fred enjoyed a second home in Valemount, B.C. After Fred's passing in 1993 Mary lived in her Valemount home. In 2013 she returned to Saskatoon to reside at Luther Riverside Terrace, then Luthercare Village Stonebridge. Mary was a woman of eclectic tastes and many talents; she had her own style. She was passionate about politics, travel, fabric arts, sports and food. Mary had a true patriot love for Canada. She was known for her generosity and loved company. Mary was delighted to become a Baba (grandmother); first Holly Anne's daughter, Jessica; next Maxwell's son, Dylan; then Michael's children, Thomas, Pamela and Peter. She enjoyed being an Aunt and had a personal relationship with each of her precious nieces and nephews. Mary received devoted care at Luther Riverside Terrace, Luthercare Village Stonebridge and Royal University Hospital. For this the family offers deepest gratitude. Mary is survived by her children Holly Anne, Mike (Pat) and Patricia; grandchildren Jessica (Joel), Dylan (Kerry), Thomas (Alisha) Pamela (Ian) and Peter; great-grandchildren Sylas, Morgan, Sylvie, Olivia, Madden and Hazel; siblings Bill Gryba, Areta Plume and Victoria Billo; in-laws Laurietta Griffin, Ed Plume; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. She was predeceased by parents Mike and Nellie; husband Fred; children Frederick Michael and Maxwell; great-granddaughters Kaylee and Kahlan; sisters Emilia and Hope; in-laws Susan Gryba, Charles Poncelet, Jack Poncelet, Ruth (Fred) Landry, Ada (Gus) Kvist, Eileen Griffin, Bill Griffin, John (Anne) Griffin, Ted Griffin; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
