Alvin Ziolkoski

Alvin was born on March 26, 1926 in the Garland, MB district, to his parents Joseph and Anastasia Ziolkoski. After completing his schooling, he ventured to Toronto, ON to join his sisters Carole and Jean. He was employed at Neilson’s Chocolate Factory, later as a waiter at Winston Grill, and for a short time at a tobacco farm, before returning to Manitoba to assist his father relocate the family general store business to Lady Lake, SK. In 1950 he married his love, Bernice Long. They were blessed with two sons; Robin in 1955 and Kelly in 1960. Alvin was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He gave his unconditional love and concern at all times and supported all of our endeavors. He was an ardent curling fan, being he was a good curler at one time. He enjoyed gardening, and had a great sense of humor. Alvin was employed by the United Grain Growers for 38 years, buying grain at Harptree, SK, Hyas, SK and Gilbert Plains, MB before being promoted to district manager in the Eston, SK territory in 1966, and to the Saskatoon, SK territory in 1973, retiring in 1988. Alvin was predeceased by his parents, step-mother Mary (Wozney), sister Carole, and sister Jean Korneiew. He is survived by his loving wife Bernice, sons Robin (Dawn) of Saskatoon, and Kelly (Valerie Mahaffey) of Los Angeles, grandchildren Aaron, Leanne, Megan, and Alice, great-grandchildren Tyson, Jack, Blake, Quinn, Elliott and Sam, and his nephew Greg Korneiew and Greg’s children Jesse, Micky and Sophie. The family wishes to thank Stensrud Lodge for their compassionate care of Alvin over the years, and for their kindness to the family. We would like to thank Dr. Tymchak who has been caring for Alvin for the last five years and prior to that, Dr. C Bowman and also the staff and doctors at St. Paul’s Hospital.
