Brent Callaghan

April 25, 2018

CALLAGHAN, Brent

Brent was born on October 25, 1962 at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon to parents Richard and Denise Callaghan, the 3rd of 9 children. As a child, Brent was very social and enjoyed activities with his many friends and family. He always had a sense of humour and enjoyed playful teasing. The Callaghans were involved in standardbred horses, and the Callaghan kids grew up around the race track where they spent a lot of time “horsing around.” Brent developed a true love of horses, and as a young man he left Saskatoon and headed to Alberta to follow his passion. Brent always regretted not completing high school, and in 1992 he returned to Saskatoon and graduated in the summer of 1993. During this time, Brent met Becky and her daughter Victoria. Some of Brent’s happiest times were spent with Becky and Victoria, and although his relationship with Becky ended, Brent had become father to Victoria, and remained devoted to her for the rest of his life. Unfortunately Becky passed away in 2006, leaving Brent as Victoria’s only parent. His kind nature made him a loving father, and later, a grandfather to Victoria’s daughter Brooklynn. Brent was also a kind and funny uncle to his many nieces and nephews. Brent’s working life after his time with the horses was spent at Sears and as a courier, before settling as warehouse manager at Canada Bread. He was a horseman at heart, song-writer, and poet. He composed many pieces over the years, some of which he shared with family and friends. Brent developed some physical symptoms in the last few years, and was diagnosed with ALS on May 4, 2017. He spent the last year of his life at Royal University Hospital, Porteous Lodge, St. Paul’s Hospital and Parkridge Centre where he received professional and compassionate care. A sincere thank you to all of the medical professionals and staff for their care, compassion and support for Brent and his family this past year. Brent received his many visitors with a positive attitude and a sense of humour and dignity which eased the emotional toll on friends and family. Brent passed away peacefully on April 25, 2018 at the age of 55, surrounded by his family in his last days and hours as he took his last breath. Brent is lovingly remembered by his daughter Victoria Laliberte, granddaughter Brooklynn, parents Denise and Richard Callaghan, siblings Debbie (Tom) Swingley, Glenda (Mark) Dziadyk, Darren (Diane) Callaghan, Lee-Ann Callaghan, Maureen (Ron) tenBrink, Cheryl (Jesse) Callaghan, Darlene (Ken) Callaghan, Trevor Callaghan, 14 nieces and nephews and 18 very special great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. A Celebration of Brent’s Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at St. Volodymyr Villa (Common Room) located at 3102 Louise Place, Saskatoon, SK. Please join the family for a light lunch afterwards. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Society, 90 Cavendish St., Regina, SK S4N 5G7.
