HILSEN, Brian Raymond
October 12, 1946 - November 22, 2018
It is with great sadness that the family of Brian Hilsen announce his passing at home with his family by his side on Thursday, November 22, 2018, just a month shy of his and beloved wife Donna’s 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Brian leaves behind his wife Donna; daughter Shauna Hilsen (Darryl), her children Anthony, Ashley, Arika and Mikayla; daughter Kathy Ewart (Adam), their children Brady and Payton; his brother Barrie and his family, along with a large extended family. He was predeceased by his parents Ray and Ruby Hilsen. Brian loved and treasured his family; his wife, children and grandchildren were his pride and joy.
He was born in Maple Creek, SK, raised and educated in Swift Current, and completed his B. A. and B. Ed in Saskatoon at the U of S. Later, he earned his Masters’ degree through the University of Victoria. He had numerous roles in education; as a teacher, administrator, mentor, chaperone, coach and referee that allowed him to impact many students, colleagues, and parents. As a teacher he will be remembered as a math whiz and a tough task master who was firm, yet fair. Colleagues respected him for his professionalism and valued his friendship. People followed his lead and often sought his guidance and counsel. He retired from the Saskatoon Public School Division in 2002.
Brian will be remembered for his sense of humour and quick wit; he usually had the last word and was a great practical joker! He was held in high esteem in all circles and his passion for life was always evident. He was generous with his talents, determined and strong-willed – you always knew where you stood with Brian.
He loved sports and competed in badminton, curling, track, basketball, volleyball and slow-pitch in his youth. He was an avid golfer who shared this obsession with Donna at every 6 AM opportunity! To describe him as a “rabid” Montreal Canadiens fan would be accurate. Brian was an outstanding referee, clinician and administrator in the sport of basketball for over 4 decades. He was an official at the U sport level; BRIT, HOOPLA, the national wheelchair basketball championships, as well as at the Canada Summer Games. He has been honoured for his service and contributions to basketball on many occasions.
Brian will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him. His family would like to thank everyone who filled his last days with their knowledge, gifts, concern, care and tenderness so that he could pass peacefully at home with dignity.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities Saskatchewan (1101 University Dr. Saskatoon, SK S7N 0K4) or to STARS Air Ambulance (2475 Airport Rd. Saskatoon, SK S7L 1M4).
