We are sad to announce the passing of Daniel. He passed away peacefully in the presence of his wife and daughter on Tuesday, January 9th, 2018 at St. Paul’s Palliative Care Unit in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He was born on January 20, 1925 in Dolganiec, Poland to his parents Daniel and Ida (Mueller) Elke. Daniel immigrated to Canada in 1929 with his parents and younger sister Elma, settling on a farm north of Minitonas, Manitoba in the Sinclair River School District, where he also attended school. Daniel farmed with his father in summer and in the winter months he worked in Bush camps cutting timber and milling it into lumber. He married Hilda (Tulman) on March 22, 1957. They lived on a farm near Swan River, Manitoba where they were blessed with three daughters, Kimberley, Florence and LeeAnn. He continued to farm and do road construction until 1967. At this time he decided to rent out his land and do road construction fulltime as a caterpillar operator. Following his road construction work Daniel worked nine years on the Hydro Dam Systems in Northern Manitoba as well as continuing his road construction work well into his 70’s. Upon retirement, they sold the family farm and moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Dan is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 60 years, Hilda, daughter Florence (Graham) Giroux and grandsons Bryn, Jace and Carson; son-in-law Glen Sagert and grandson Kyle (Diane) and great-grandson Ikinilik Sagert. He is also survived by his granddaughter Bailey Gardner; his sisters Ruth (Bill) Hart of Minitonas, Manitoba; Hilda (Art) Lewis of Perth, Ontario; as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. Dan was predeceased by his parents Daniel and Ida; his daughters Kimberley Sagert (Elkie), LeeAnn Gardner (Elkie), son-in-law Daniel Gardner; brother Milbert and wife Ursula of Kamloops, BC; sister Elma and husband Joseph Turk of Brighton, Ontario. His family and all who knew him will remember him fondly for his kind and gentle spirit. A Celebration of Daniel’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018 at Emmanuel Baptist Church (1636 Acadia Dr.) in Saskatoon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation – Palliative Care Unit (1702 – 20th St. W, Saskatoon, SK S7M 0Z9).
