Duane Owen Slater

April 1, 1967 - June 5, 2017

Duane passed away peacefully on June 5, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife Marla and children Cole and Krista. He is also survived by his mother Starla Slater, father Dennis Slater and wife Karen Chapman-Slater (Sarah and Brianne), brothers Troy (Jennifer, Preston and Tyce), Derrick (Carol, Mason and Keaton), grandmother Phyllis Beach, his sisters and brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Duane was born in Regina, SK on April 1, 1967. He moved to Saskatoon with his parents at the age of 7 and attended River Heights Elementary School. He graduated from Marion Graham Collegiate in 1986. Duane and Marla met cruising 8th Street that year and were married on August 18, 1990. Shortly after getting married, Marla and Duane moved to Kelowna, BC where they started Slater Developments building houses during the early 90’s, and returned to Saskatoon in 1996. Duane had a strong aptitude for business and thrived on “making the deal”! He worked alongside his dad and brothers at D & S Homes helping to build the business into the success it is today. Kelowna was one of Duane’s favorite spots spending countless hours on Okanagan Lake and skiing at Big White. Duane and Cole took a short trip out to Big White this March and even skied, fulfilling one of his last wishes. Duane, Marla and family spent a lot of time in Scottsdale, Arizona during the last 7 years. Duane loved the Arizona weather, the Scottsdale vibe and the big city life. Duane was a very social person and loved having people around him, the more the merrier. Another one of Duane’s favorite things was hanging out at the cabin at Emma Lake with family and friends. He loved staying up late and kept the party going till the wee hours of the morning! Duane was a strong believer in naturopathic and alternative treatments and did everything he could to prolong his life. He was a strong inspiration to other cancer patients as he spent many hours talking with them and giving them hope. Marla and his children took care of Duane at home these past few months. Duane and his mom, Starla had a special relationship always telling each other exactly what they thought. They became even closer as Starla spent many hours with Duane during his illness. Duane will be sadly missed by Marla and kids and the rest of his family. A Memorial Service will take place on Monday, June 12, 2017, at 11:00 am at Lakeview Church (Site 510, RR5). Donations may be made to the Canadian Naturopathic Foundation or Saskatchewan Cancer Agency - Cancer Research. Arrangements in care of John Schachtel, Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978- 5200.
