June 11, 2019

McDONALD, Elizabeth “Beth”

August 29, 1954 - June 11, 2019

Beth was born on August 29, 1954, to Cecil and Catherine McDonald in Eston, SK. She was the oldest of eight and had many responsibilities from a young age.

Beth attended Saltburn school, a one-room schoolhouse, until grade 6. Her teacher was Mrs. Vi McAvoy who would later influence her career choice. Beth then attended Elrose Composite School until grade 12 and graduated in 1972. She then attended the U of S College of Education and convocated in 1976 with a degree in Special Education. Beth began her 39-year career teaching grade 3 at Walter Aseltine School in Rosetown, SK. After Beth retired, she moved to Saskatoon to care for our Mother who passed away in February of 2019.

Beth was a devoted Saskatchewan Roughrider fan and a season ticket holder of 37 years. The Riders became a regular part of her school curriculum and as a result, she created many new Rider fans each year. Beth was also a fan of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team – she especially enjoyed watching Montreal beat Boston.

In July of 2017 Beth was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and fought hard for the last two years.

Our family would like to thank Margie Kindrachuk, Beth’s nurse at the Saskatoon Cancer Centre who was her most trusted ally on her journey; the Pharmacy staff at Shoppers’ Drug Mart (Broadway) for helping us navigate the health care system; Dr. Barry Rieder and the staff at RUH emergency as well as the Paramedics and Firemen who worked so hard to save Beth on what would be her final day. Beth was predeceased by her father Cecil in 1976 and her mother Catherine in 2019; two brothers, Kenny and Michael; grandparents Edward and Mary McMahon, and Austin and Caroline McDonald. Beth is survived by her siblings: Lyle (Amy) McDonald (Saskatoon); Ed McDonald (Kamloops, BC); Linda McDonald (Edmonton, AB); Colleen McDonald (Saskatoon); Moureen McDonald (Saskatoon); nephew Leigh (Laura) McDonald (Martensville); niece Raya (Clae) Hack (Saskatoon); nephew Sean (Amy) McDonald (Saskatoon) and niece Shyann McDonald (Saskatoon); grand-nephew Luke McDonald; grand-nieces Hailey and Rylie Hack; close friends: Sandra and Murray Simpson; Debbie and Lian Wood; great neighbours: Ken and Chris Meier; Val and Jill Hnatuk; special friends: Pam and Jim Hammel and Don Narcisse #80.

Beth will also be greatly missed by her dog Charlie who spent the past two years by her side.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church, 1902 Munroe Avenue, Saskatoon. The Celebrant will be Rev. Father Rheal Bussiere. The Rite of Committal will held at St. Basil’s Parish Cemetery, Plato, SK, at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, 2019.
