Helene Thoma

Helene was born February 20, 1925, in Pila, Czechoslovakia, to Georg and Rosa Burjanko.  She faced and survived numerous hardships before, during and after WWII in Czechoslovakia and Germany.  She escaped from East Germany to West Germany then immigrated to Canada in July 1952 and married August Thoma on August 2, 1952.  Helene passed away on what would have been her 66th wedding anniversary.  She is survived by her son Carl (Elsie) Thoma, and daughter Rosie (Harold) Bichel.  She was blessed with seven grandchildren:  Bryce (Jennifer) Thoma, Brent (Megan) Thoma, Janelle (Rick) Hazell, Ryan (Carmen) Bichel, Brittney Bichel (fiancé Colin Christie), Garrett Bichel (fiancée Shelby McNair) and Tyler Bichel.  She was further blessed with ten great-grandchildren:  Collins and Smith Thoma, Wynn Thoma; Parker, Pierson and twin boys Chase and Reese Bichel; Declan Christie and identical twin girls Emmeline and Rowan Christie.  Helene is also survived by her twin brother Johann in Germany and numerous nieces and nephews in Germany and Slovakia.  “Oma” will be sorely missed by her special furry friend and companion Jack Daniels.  She was predeceased by her husband August on January 11, 1985; her parents, sister Aurelia and brothers Josef and Karl and close friend Stephanie (Schmidt) Morris.  “Oma” was a loving mother, grandchild caregiver, homemaker, gardener, seamstress, property manager, and business partner with her husband.  She opened her home to many visitors from Germany, Edmonton and Kerrobert area who enjoyed her homemade noodles, soup, pancakes and baking.  She enjoyed music, dancing, knitting and playing crazy rummy with her grandkids.  She also enjoyed socializing with the Schmidt family.  Family was Oma’s life.  She passed away peacefully at Extendicare Preston with her immediate family by her side.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you please take the time to visit an elderly person at Extendicare in Helene’s memory.  Vigil of Prayer will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 7, 2018.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 8, 2018.  Both services will be held at St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church, 1202 Ave O South, Saskatoon.
