John Franko passed away peacefully on August 10, 2019 at the age of 94. John was born and raised on a farm near Theodore, Saskatchewan, the son of Wasyl and Katherine Franko. He is survived by his brother Stefan (Roma), his sisters Vicki Wolf and Rose Kutcher, his sister-in-law Jennie Franko, and nieces and nephews Roman (Joy), Ivan (Karen), Sherry Wolf (Ian), David (Arlene), Debbie Nix (Stuart), Judy Larson (Don), and Joanne (Tim), as well as many great nieces and great nephews. He is also survived by his special friend Noreen Kimery. John is predeceased by his sisters Mary Shumay (Bill), Doris Rohachuk, and brother Nick. John farmed with his father on the family farm, as well as on farmland near Watson which he took over in 1958. During the winters, John would work either locally, in Saskatoon, and as far away as Vancouver and Toronto. Even after he sold his farm, farming never left his blood. Regardless of the time of year, he paid close attention to the weather and would always comment on its impact on crops. He regularly attended auction sales, and maintained a keen interest in farm auctions until the latter part of his life. John enjoyed travelling, first to Mexico in 1978, to Hawaii in 1979, and to Ukraine in 1980. After a short marriage to Stella Parchewsky in the early 1980’s, John met Noreen Kimery. Together they travelled to western and eastern Canada, and across the United States. John’s favourite vacation spots were Nevada and Arizona. John was proud of his Ukrainian heritage and regularly attended Ukrainian festivals from Dauphin, Manitoba to Vegreville, Alberta. He loved country music, fiddle music, Ukrainian music, and he loved to dance. John’s health began to fail earlier this year but he lived on his own until recently. A sincere thank you to the staff of Ilarion Residence where John lived for 12 years, and to the staff of Keedwell Assisted Living Centre who cared for John during his last weeks. Memorial donations can be made to Ilarion Residence, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of All Saints, or to a charity of one’s choice.
