Marguerite O'Toole

April 20, 2019

O’TOOLE, Marguerite Cecilia

It is with loving sadness we share that Marguerite passed away peacefully on April 20, 2019. She left us with courage and dignity following a valiant struggle with cancer. Marguerite was born July 30, 1951 at Sandy Point, Newfoundland and grew up in Heatherton until she left to attend high school in St. John’s. She married Charlie Gale of Robinsons and had two children whom she adored. Marguerite moved to Saskatoon in 1983. She worked as a corrections officer at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre for 15 years until poor health placed her on disability. She loved her work and was well respected by colleagues and clients for her sense of fairness and justice. She was assigned temporary supervisory positions throughout her career and served as a union shop steward. Marguerite was a life-long learner. While working she completed a Certificate of Social Work from the University of Regina which included an internship as a Probation Officer in Saskatoon. Marguerite was active in the LGBTQ and A.A. communities and volunteered with the Saskatoon Community Clinic Board, and the Saskatoon Council on Aging. She annually walked to raise funds for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation on behalf of her granddaughter. Marguerite was a proud Newfoundlander and regularly travelled home to jig for cod. She was hardworking, lively, fun-loving, and feisty, and was easily liked by all who met her. She loved the outdoors: camping, canoeing, golfing, motorcycling and gardening. She enjoyed travelling, particularly her trips to Great Britain, Morocco, and Vietnam. Most of all she loved her family and was a thoughtful and playful grandmother. Marguerite was predeceased by her loving mother, Mary (O’Toole) Renouf, and four brothers: Jerome, Eugene, William and Donald. She leaves her daughter, Sonya Gale-Gentner (Gord), grandchildren, Taylor and Mitchell; son, Fabian Gale (Jaime), grandchildren, Terin and Ayden. Marguerite was the middle of 13 siblings and is survived by sisters Anne Gill (Jabe), Teresa Downing (John), Venita Young (Kevin), Lori Young, Madonna Young (Terry), Cathy O’Quinn (Kevin), and by brothers, Fred Renouf (Della), and Paul Renouf. She is also survived by her aunt and uncle, Shirley (O’Toole) and Frank Power, of St. John’s, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and her former husband Charlie. Marguerite will be missed by many friends. We would like especially to thank Lorna Doerkson and Heather Brenneman for their devotion during the last months of her journey. A Celebration of Marguerite’s Life will be held at The Willows (382 Cartwright St.) in Saskatoon, on Monday, May 20, 2019 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Donations in Marguerite’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements in care of Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
