Marjorie Veronica Theresa McFadden
November 8, 1924 ~ May 23, 2017
Marjorie McFadden (nee McGettigan). We are sad to announce that mum passed away at Sunshine Manor (Campbell River, BC) on May 23, 2017. She was born November 8, 1924 in Derry, Northern Ireland. She was educated at Thornhill College in Derry. She received a teaching certificate from the Royal College of Music (London) that allowed her to teach privately and at Thornhill College. Her talent as a pianist allowed her to help support her mother and siblings after the death of her father. She also assumed the running of her father’s business as a cattle dealer for a number of years. She moved to Hodgeville, SK a few days before her wedding to her childhood sweetheart, Daniel McFadden, in 1959. Life on the prairies was a culture shock to her but she adjusted and spent the next fifty years calling Saskatchewan home. Although she was able to travel to Ireland frequently to visit family, she was also very involved with the Irish community in Saskatoon through the Saskatoon Association for the Promotion of Irish Culture and later Comhaltas. She enjoyed many years as part of local painting clubs and made lasting friendships with the women in the groups. She had a very strong faith and was a longtime parishioner at St. Paul’s Cathedral and then St. Patrick’s Church in Campbell River. She is survived by her four children and families: Andy (Barbara) of West Vancouver, BC (Brighid, Eoin (Brittany) and Michael); Kathleen (Rob Arnold) of Black Creek, BC (Brendan, Liam, Fergus and Declan); Sean (Lana) of Calgary, AB (Seamus, Ciara, Eamon, Roisin and Catriona); Maeve (Hugh Murphy) of Moncton, NB (Kieran, Padraig, Desmond, Nuala, Hughie); her sister Kathleen Morrison (Derry, N Ireland); sisters-in-law Claire McGettigan (Saskatoon, SK), Rita Flannery (Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo, Ireland), Margaret McFadden (Carrigart, Co. Donegal, Ireland). She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel McFadden (2003) and her brother, Jim McGettigan (2011). Vigil will be held on Friday, June 2 at 7:00pm at St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church (1902 Munroe Avenue, corner of Munroe Ave. and Taylor Street). Mass of the Christian Burial on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 10:00am at St. Paul’s Co-Cathedral (720 Spadina Crescent, Saskatoon, SK). Lunch will be served after mass in the church hall. Rite of Committal will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Catholic Section. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to L’Arche. Funeral arrangements entrusted to John Schachtel, Mourning Glory Funeral Services, (306) 978-5200.
