MARY MAGDALENA SCHAAN
Many people knew Mom by her smile. She was very sociable, had a great sense of humor, always eager to go anywhere, and loved life to the fullest.
Mary, the 11th of 14 children, was born on August 10, 1928 on the family farm in the Colonsay District and attended Breeze Brae School. On October 24, 1950 she married Chris Schaan. They farmed two miles south of Young. In 1989 they retired to Saskatoon.
During her lifetime she loved to dance, prepare meals and visit with family and friends, bowl, play cards, volunteer with the CWL and various health care facilities. From 1990 to August 2017 Saturday “Sander coffee” at Market Mall was always enjoyed. Mom looked forward to time spent and was eager to tease the extended family including Mom and Dad’s 72 nieces and nephews and their families.
On October 3, 2017 she joined her family in eternal life. Her husband, Chris (2013), parents Baldazar (1945) and Martzalena (1975) (nee Brandel) Sander; siblings, John (1912) Monica (1922), Edith (2000), Katie (1922), Pius(1990), Jack (2010), Hilda (1998), Ned (2010), Walter (1988), Isadore (2006) and son-in-law, Rob Dumont (2015).
Mary is survived by her four daughters and four sons, Phil Schaan-Dumont, Wayne Schaan, Marlene Schaan, Lorraine Zazula (Harv), Murray Schaan, Dorothy Wilchynski (Brent) Ron Schaan (Carmen) and Richard Schaan (Carrie); grandchildren, Marie Dumont, Christi (Kerstan) Fidek, Derek (Angie) Zazula, Candace (Jonathan) Leicht, Brandi (Mitch) Kowalski, Kyla Schaan, Justin (Kaitlyn) Wilchynski, Alissa (Konrad) Paley, Laura, Grace, Cody, Chyanne, and Levi Schaan and 12 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Sr. Genny Sander SMS and Loretta Carson; brother Tony (Barb) Sander; sisters-in law, Hilda, Marge and Lynne Sander. Mom was the last of the Schaan generation of that era.
Since August 2013 Mom has spent time in Persephone Care Home, all three hospitals from July – Oct 2016 Extendicare and St. Anne’s Home. We are grateful for the excellent care she received. Donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Sask Inc (1405 Faulkner Cres., Saskatoon, SK S7L 3R5) or St. Patrick’s Cemetery Fund (Young, SK S0K 4Y0).
