Mary Leneta Hope
Mary Leneta (Neta) Hope passed away peacefully on August 2, 2017. She is survived by her two sons, Kevin, of Turtle Lake, SK and Kerry (Danielle), of St. Paul, AB, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Neta was born February 4, 1930 near Kennedy, SK to Leonard and Lavina Haryett. She attended school at Maryfield and finished her grade 12 by correspondence from Moosomin, while working in the family restaurant. Following high school, she moved to Toronto where she enjoyed becoming part of the English Riding scene. She later returned to Regina, then the Carrot River area, and finally settled permanently in Saskatoon where her sons were born in 1956 and 1957. She worked for many years at the City Assessor’s Office and then began selling real estate in 1975. Her passions included her sons, of whom she always spoke with great pride, and her horses. She also enjoyed reading, politics and the time she spent at Turtle Lake. Neta was ahead of her time in many ways – always fiercely independent and proud. Her life was not always easy, but she made her own way and lived on her own terms. She took out a mortgage and bought a house on Colony Street in January, 1965, when it was uncommon for a single woman to do so. She rented rooms to students over the years to help make the payments. She chose the neighbourhood so that her sons would grow up in a university environment and have the opportunity for further education which she never had. Although she had several opportunities, she chose never to remarry, preferring to live privately and independently. Her family would like to thank the staff at Samaritan House for their kindness and care over the past several years while Neta suffered from progressive dementia. We are so lucky to be living in this part of the World, amongst amazing and loving people. There will be no memorial service out of respect for Neta’s wishes. She will be interred at Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon at a private service. Arrangements in care of John Schachtel of Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
