RACHEL MARY WOOD

 March 21, 1919 – June 28, 2019

With great sadness, the family announces the death of Rachel Wood on June 28, 2019.  Surrounded by family members, Rachel passed away, at the age of 100.  Beloved Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandma, Rachel will be missed by her family:  Ormond George (Lut) Wood, Ormond George’s children, Randy Wood and Rhonda (Cliff) Wellicome and their mother, Doreen (Don) Poirier; and Willie (Sonja) Wood, their children, Walter (Tammie) Wood and Warren (Nina) Wood.   In addition to the four grandchildren listed above, Rachel leaves to mourn her five Great-Grandchildren, Brayden Wellicome, Mitchell Wellicome, Joel Wood, Vanessa Wood and Lidia Wood.  Rachel was predeceased by her husband, Jim (1964), by her Mother, Helen Veitch (1973), by her Dad, Ashton Veitch (1950) and by her brother, Jim (1997).  Rachel is survived by her Sister-In-Law, Eleanor Veitch (Quesnel, B.C.) and all her family.   Also, left to mourn Rachel is a special son-like friend who always called her “Step-Mom”, Gordon Booth (Phyl Campbell), Ladysmith, B.C.

Rachel Veitch was born on the family farm in rural Dunblane, Saskatchewan.  She married James Ormond (Jim) Wood on September 1, 1940.  She loved being a Mom and raising her two sons.  In July, 1955, after moving to Saskatoon, she worked at many places cleaning homes.  After Jim’s passing in 1964, she obtained a housekeeping job at St. Paul’s Hospital, which she enjoyed.  She loved dancing; her favorite being square dancing with Jim in Dunblane.  She loved playing bingo and travelling with her friend, Dorothy Telfer in her senior years.  After her hip injury and her move into Stensrud Lodge on February 4, 2015, she loved the social activities and the wonderful assistance she received from staff at Stensrud Lodge.

The family wishes to express our deepest thank you for the superlative care and attention she received at Stensrud Lodge, her home for the past four and a half years.

The family also wishes to thank Laura van Loon, Pastoral Care Nurse from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, for her many hours of devoted care, attention and visitation to Rachel at Stensrud Lodge.  Her prayers and support to the family are deeply appreciated and brought us healing and comfort.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 436 Spadina Crescent East, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan S7K 3G6 on July 15, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon in the church basement.  After the luncheon, all family will proceed to Woodlawn Cemetary, where Rachel will rest with Jim.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan Inc., Oliver Lodge, 1405 Faulkner Crescent, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan S7L 3R5 (saskatoon@alzheimer.sk.ca) or to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 436 Spadina Crescent East, Saskatoon, SK S7K 3G6.
