June 16, 1925 – March 24, 2021
Alice Octavia Kindrachuk of Saskatoon passed away on March 24, 2021. She was born to Michael and Barbara Pawliuk (née Soroka) at Meacham on June 16, 1925 and grew up on the family farm, where she spent many happy days roaming under the wide prairie sky with her beloved dog Sandy. Alice came to Saskatoon to complete high school and graduated from business college in 1946. It was in Saskatoon that she met Richard Kindrachuk; Alice and Dick were married in 1947.
Alice worked for many years as a medical stenographer, first at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, then at Saskatoon City Hospital, and finally with Associated Radiologists. She took much satisfaction from her work and made deep and lifelong friendships with many of her colleagues.
Alice enjoyed life. She loved cooking and gardening, made hundreds of beautiful Easter eggs, and was an avid and accomplished five-pin bowler. She spent many long and happy nights playing highly competitive rounds of Scrabble with her dear sister-in-law Mary Kindrachuk and Mary’s sisters. A member of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada for 78 years, she gave much time and energy to the support of church and cultural activities. She had a fine alto voice and sang for many years with the Cathedral choir and the Dibrova Seniors’ Ensemble.
Alice is survived by her son Mark (Christine), her grandchildren Julia and Max (Sarah), her sister-in-law Janet Pawliuk, many loving nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins, Christine’s family, and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband and by her brother Dr. Zenon Pawliuk.
The family extends sincere thanks to the staff at Stonebridge Crossing Retirement Community and Saskatoon City Hospital Transition Unit, and to all those who sustained Alice by staying in touch with her despite the constraints of the pandemic.
