Henderson, John Duncan
On April 23, 2021, John Duncan Henderson died peacefully at St. Paul’s Hospital in his 77th year. John was predeceased by his parents, Andrew Henderson and Audrey (Moore), and by his daughter, Margie. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Mary Louise (Lou); daughter, Laura Fenton (Peter), son-in-law Geoffrey Messier; grandkids, Michael Messier, Andrew and Katherine Fenton; brother Drew Henderson (Kathy); and extended family across Canada.
His father’s career in banking gave John the opportunity to live in many provinces over the course of his youth. He was born in Montreal, QC, but also spent childhood years in St. John, NB, St. John’s, NL, Sault Ste Marie, ON, and Winnipeg, MB. As well, he spent a summer away from home working at the Banff Springs Hotel in Alberta when he was all of 14. He graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1966 and shortly afterwards started a long career with Procter and Gamble.
John and Lou were married in 1968 and lived briefly in Brandon, MB before moving to Saskatchewan where they chose to raise their family and ultimately retire. John enjoyed bird identification, hunting, fishing and spending time at the family cottage. He was an avid reader and loved crossword, logic and math puzzles, and family history. He is remembered by those who knew him for his sharp wit, dry sense of humour, and his love of puns. He loved spending time with his grandkids, passing on his famous rye bread technique (Grandpa Bread), playing cribbage, or testing their math or navigation skills.
The family would like to thank Dr. Spafford and his team, and the nursing staff on Ward 5B for their care and compassion. In accordance with John’s wishes, there will be no funeral. In lieu of flowers donations may be directed to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan (cancerfoundationsask.ca).
