GIRLING, Kenneth Brian
September 8, 1963 - July 15, 2020
Ken passed away on Wednesday morning, July 15, 2020, following complications from surgery to repair a ruptured brain aneurysm. His transition was peaceful, his wife Yun and sister Donna holding his hands.
Ken had his own brand of humour, always ready with that one liner. He loved all things Star Wars, fishing, hunting with Dad and their bird dogs, classical music with the odd Led Zeppelin thrown in, dinosaurs, the Riders, gardening, building models, genealogy, reading classics and especially gatherings with his Girling family where there was always lots of laughter, hugs and love. He studied at the U of R, the U of S, U of Calgary, beginning in Education, achieving a degree in Political Science before switching to Palaeontology. His lifelong interest in dinosaurs led to the employment with the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, where he was able to participate in digs at Eastend. He loved his work as an ESL instructor, having done so in several countries overseas and most recently at the University of Regina. In between his studying and traveling, he also worked at the Saskatchewan Science Centre and Regina Public Library. All of these took a back seat to his love for his daughter Mei and wife Yun. He brought his little family from China to Canada so we were able to share these loves. Every conversation with Ken was an education; he taught Mei so much in her 6 years.
We were grateful that before his very complicated and risky surgery, he called each of us to say goodbye although we never really thought it would be. The staff at RUH were amazing, making this horrible ordeal tolerable. He was surrounded by the presence and love of his immediate family on his last day. Ken was predeceased by his mother Doreen Girling and we take great comfort in knowing that Mom was waiting for him. He is so loved and will be missed beyond measure by his surviving family; his wife Yun and daughter Mei; father Ken Sr.; sisters Karen (Dennis), Donna and Beth (Ken); nieces and nephews Shaun, Jackie, Megan, Daniel, Cameron, Mary-Beth; and greats Violet, James, Charlie, Louis and Thomas; his Girling cousins; uncle Jim Tatton, aunt Dolores Tatton; Richard Foley; and in-laws Meijuan Gong and Zhaolin Wu of Yangzhou, China; and the many friends and coworkers he met along his way.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a Private Memorial and Interment will be held.
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people
And the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
And endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better
Whether by a healthy child,
A garden patch, or a redeemed social condition
To know even one life has breathed easier
Because you lived here.
This is to have succeeded.
